MPTC Builds the Country’s First Large-Scale Interconnected Expressway Network

by Junne S. Grajales, FEBRUARY 2021

MPTC is building the Urban Ring Road, a rapid, quality standard network of roads that will connect the north, south, east, and west of Metro Manila.

“That’s why we call it the ‘MPTC Urban Ring Road,’ which is designed to improve circulation and assure unimpeded traffic flow,” said REF.

The MPTC Urban Ring Road project will link our network of expressways in all four directions of Metro Manila for seamless travel.

Apart from MPT South’s NLEX-CAVITEX Port Link Expressway and the C-5 South Link, these two other projects complete the country’s first extensive expressway connection:

  • The 19.4-kilometer elevated C-5 Expressway that will connect Quezon City to Taguig City and lessen the two-hour travel time to only 15 minutes.
  • The five-kilometer elevated NLEX Harbor Link-Port Area Section which will connect Manila’s Port Area to NLEX.
The elevated C-5 Expressway will ease traffic for motorists from Quezon City, Pasig City, and Taguig City. The typical two-hour journey from NLEX to SLEX via the C-5 Road will be lessened to only 15 minutes.

“It is designed to put order in urban transport. The economic losses of city traffic are enormous. We’d like to help manage it, and this is our contribution,” added REF.

The project will link the capital through the interconnected expressways which will include a “ring around the metropolis” for easy travel. It will ease congestion in local roads and strengthen the road system through differentiating local in-city journeys from inter-city to inter-regional trips.

Northbound, the five-kilometer elevated NLEX Harbor Link–Port Area Section will run alongside the Manila Bay, to Anda Circle in the Port Area, then to R-10 Road and all the way up to NLEX via the NLEX Harbor Link.
