MPT South Women, Keeping You Safe

by Mhanny S. Agusto, MARCH 2021

“Panglalaki ‘yang trabaho mo…”

“Kababae mong tao, diyan ka nagtatrabaho…”

Believe it or not, these are words commonly uttered by people who stereotype a work, or a task based on Gender. There are still people who associate a certain job or profession based on a person’s gender and defying these “norms” will make you unfit for that certain industry.

But as time goes by, the work environment in all industries has shifted, and ours is not an exemption. From a world being stereotyped as “panglalaki”, now also regarded as a workplace where women also lead and excel. Take MPT South as an example, a company in a Toll road or Expressway Industry which currently holds 44% Women Employees in its total workforce.

And in line with the celebration of Women’s Month, we deem it necessary to put the spotlight again on our female employees who excel in the fields where they are into. With the main headline “SHE MAKES WAY FOR YOUR SAFE GATEWAY!”, we highlighted the employees who play a vital role in our business, from the Pre-Construction Phase, Construction, and actual Operational Phase, and played a role in ensuring the safe gateway of our motorists.

We start with Engr. Edelyn W. Wakat or “Eds” from the Project Management Department of the Tollways Development and Engineering (TDE) Division, shared with us her struggles in her early years as an Engineer. But these struggles didn’t stop her from learning and growing and used this as an opportunity to gain self-confidence.

Also from TDE Division is Jinky C. Vargas, the sole female Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) Professional of MPT South. In her job as ESH Senior Specialist, sometimes she is perceived to be as weak and cannot keep up with male ESH practitioners. But Jinky proved them otherwise and has continuously thrived in this industry for years.

Forming a crucial part in the pre-construction works of every project, Melanie T. Flores, or “Melai” from TDE Division – Right of Way Department uses her natural-born skills in communication and dealing with people. Being a woman does not make less of a person, but rather sees it as a great advantage in the tasks that she needs to do – this, boosting her self-confidence more.

We also got some inspiring words from the sole female Security Operations Specialist of MPT South, Karla Carizza B. Orozco, or simply, “Kaye”. According to her, in an environment where the majority are men, many questioned her ability and competency. But this pushed her more to prove that the career path she chose has no gender and she can get the job done as to how men do it, or even better.

As for the Toll and Traffic Associate Celina Joyce D. Lazaro, she is very thankful that she is a part of a team that gives “life” to the expressway, especially in the aspect of Toll Collection and Traffic Management System. Per Celine, gender shouldn’t get in the way for you to perform well in whichever field you are, as long as you are prepared emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Last but not the least, we also highlighted the roles of our women front-liners who are at the forefront in dealing with our motorists and as referred to as the modern-day heroes especially in this time of the pandemic. Rea Joy K. Flores, who also plays a role of a mother and a wife, faces some challenges in balancing work and life. But this does not limit her in making sure that our motorists will be serviced well 24/7. For her fellow toll supervisor Jobel L. Manansala, achieving this Customer Centric goal is not just a job of a single person, but more of a team effort. And as a woman leader, she makes sure that she can be a leader who can be relied on.

These amazing women are just a few of our female workforce, and surely, each has an amazing story to tell. But no matter who you are or what your gender is, we share one common reason for us to strive hard and work with integrity, and that is because of our love for our family and our love for our industry.
